New Storytelling Event Shows Rarely Seen Onboard Locations and Features the Team Members Who Make It Happen
SEATTLE, October 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Cruise ships are often called floating cities. Every function of a Coastal City must be performed while traveling the world, and countless team members work together to operate each ship seamlessly. For the first time ever, Holland America Line brings this story to life in a captivating new show called “A City on the Sea”.
“A City on the Sea” explores areas on board like the engine room to show the miracle of modern engineering and the laundry to see how thousands of sheets are handled daily. Guests will explore a city’s staples like bakeries, restaurants, theaters, grocery stores, and hardware stores, all without leaving the ship.

“A City on the Sea” is a daytime presentation that debuts on the historic October 15 transatlantic voyage aboard Rotterdam and will be offered on all cruises in the fleet from early 2023.

A storytelling event presented on the Ship World Stage, “A City on the Sea” lifts the curtain on cruise ship operations through video footage and immersive interviews. Presented with live narration by the ship’s Cruise and Travel Director – who is joined by other ship’s officers like the captain and crew – guests are taken on an illuminating and delightful journey behind closed doors while meeting the people who call Holland America Line ships their home Away From Home.
“‘A City on the Sea’ is a unique take on a behind-the-scenes view by not only showing how our ships operate, but also sharing incredible stories about the people who make it happen,” said Michael Smith, Senior Vice President, Customer Experience and Product Development, Holland America Line. “We thought a lot about how we can make this show a transformative moment where the complexity of running a floating city becomes a celebration of the human spirit and all that we are capable of accomplishing.”
