My Favorite New York Activities

Hey guys, KnitWit here again. Sorry it’s been awhile since my last article… You know I’d much rather be writing for you guys, but sometimes work gets in there and messes that up! Today I want to talk about my favorite activities in NYC, my hometown! A lot of people think that New York is just a business town, but there is so much more there for people to do! There is all kinds of fun to be had in the city. Here are some of my faves to do on the weekends when I’m not bogged down with work. Here we go!

Clubbing

Oh man, how could you not add this one. Clubbing in NYC is DOPE. There are all kinds of girls there, the DJs are the best I’ve ever seen, and Manhattan cocktails are good any time of the year. What’s not to like? I don’t go clubbing every night, cause that would mess you up pretty bad. But I try to make it out with my friends at least once or twice a week. A little tip: be really nice to the doormen and bouncers, but don’t suck up. Try to hit a happy medium. Be friendly without being a suck-up, and they will usually make your night a whole lot easier.

Paintball

New York has some pretty strict gun laws and it can be really hard to get a gun in the city, but that’s probably for the best. Paintball is so much better! Now, my favorite paintball course isn’t actually in the city, it’s across the river in Jersey City, New Jersey. It’s in the woods, there are places to hide, and all kinds of targets to shoot. I like to get all my gear from browsing the http://gunwildfire.com website, and it usually works a lot better than the stuff my friends use. I tend and love to win!

P.S. Make sure you get safety gear before you go to a paintball course. If you don’t have the proper gear like a paintball mask, they will kick you out because it isn’t safe. Just a word of advice!

Eating

We’ve already established the drinking is a lot of fun in New York because the clubbing scene is great, but the eating scene is just as good. New York pizza is world-renown for a reason… Because it tastes amazing. And since there is a large population of Italian immigrants in and around the NYC area, the Italian restaurants are top of the line. The Italian wines there are amazing, just as good (or better!) than a lot of the California wines that I like. And if you like Asian food, you need to take a trip to Chinatown. The Asian food there is the best I’ve ever had. And a lot of it is authentic, so if you don’t want the Americanized version you can give it a try there!

New York has something for everyone. If you guys have a favorite activity that I missed let me know!

Tips for Watching Better Streaming Videos

cinema-450805_960_720Hi everyone, I’ve just returned from a friend’s place. We had a blast watching a live video streaming on my friend’s latest smartphone. With many big names in streaming such as UStream, Justin TV and other options present, you can now have easy access to entertainment and news in real time.

But being spoilt for choices can have its own downside. Choosing the wrong one can make the entire experience a sour one. Here are some quick streaming tricks and tips to make your streaming path smoother and truly enjoyable.

Use your TV for comfort

While streaming works best on your desktop, watching it is not as comfortable as in you do in your couch in the living room. If you have a desktop or laptop with HDMI port, you can connect it to your HDTV and watch. Comfort is always paramount whether you are at home or driving in your car. And when it comes to babies and kids safety too ranks high in the list. My friend uses a top quality car seat he got from https://thewisemom.com/, to ensure his child is safe and comfortable while driving.

Streaming resolution

If you have hiccupping or stuttering streams, changing the resolution of the video stream can help. But I’ve found that lowering the resolution is not the answer to this problem. You may have to experiment with higher and lower resolutions, before you find one that works better.

Easy stream switch

apple-691282_960_720For those who are more inclined towards streaming video games and related videos, third party streaming clients such as WellPlayed and Teevox provide an all-inclusive and user friendly interface for watching the streams from Own3d.tv or Twitch.tv.

If you want to view multiple streams concurrently or switch easily between two separate streams, Teevox is a great choice. It has two mobile Android apps, so you can even watch your favourite shows on the go.

My friend uses these apps while he goes on family trips. With his wife driving and kid safely secured in a Infant Car Seat, he enjoys the videos without any interruption.  With the help of the apps your tablet or smartphone can turn into a remote for controlling your PC, if your streaming via your PC for your HDTV. You needn’t get up every time you want to change channels.

Easy chat feature

The key feature that makes live streaming popular is the ease with which you can interact with all other viewers and even the event host via the inbuilt chat feature such as mIRC.  You just log into the chat room on the streaming TV such as Twitch or Justin TV by entering your account name and the channel you prefer to watch.  Once you enter in the password, you can join the chat with other viewers and best of all, you will not have any lag in the video as the pressure on the browser is eliminated.

Hardware acceleration

When you come across a heavy pixelated stream, or you are using web player with Flash base, you have a way out of the heavy pixilation.  You should right click on your stream window and choose the settings option. In the settings, uncheck the enable hardware acceleration. While the pixilation issue may not resolve, if it is due to fault in our internet connection, the hardware acceleration has been found to cause the pixilation in many live streaming sites.

Electric Violins – an Amazing Technological Item

Electric Violins - an Amazing Technological ItemI met an old friend last week for coffee. I hadn’t seen him in a bit and I found out that he was in a band. I knew he played the violin, and I have a soft spot for them, so I said yes when he asked if I would like to come see them play at a gig in a club on the Upper East Side. So I went and saw them play, and they were amazing! But what I was most surprised at what that my friend used to play a beautiful classic violin, and now he had this black and red badass electric violin. I met him backstage later and asked to see it and was quite impressed. That’s where I got the inspiration to look into electric violins a bit and write a post about them. So here it is!

The main difference between an electric violin and a regular one is that electric violins have an electronic sound output. These are not to be confused with amplified violins which just have a pickup built into the body. Electric violins usually don’t have a solid body and that’s the main reason their design is sometimes so cool. Yes, beautifully carved wooden violins are amazing, but there is something so badass about these no-body violins!

I knew all of that before I started investigating them, but what I didn’t know s that they have been used since the 1920s! They were pretty rare than, and not many people used them. Well, times are a-changing and today really a lot of artists opt for electric violins rather than regular ones. And another thing worth mentioning about them is that a good electrical violin is not even that expensive to buy. From what I saw, a good classical violin is often more expensive!

From what I gathered from articles and forums, and from my friend, a lot of people prefer electric violins because they are amazingly versatile – you can excel by playing the national anthem, as well as at a wedding. They are also great for silent practicing, which you simply cannot do with a classical violin. A lot of people go electric because they live in apartment buildings and don’t have a place where they can practice because of the noise. This is not a problem with electric violins, as you can just put headphones on and practice without being heard.

Another amazing thing about electric violins is that you can actually plug an SD card in them and combine the sound you make with any recording you want! Amazing! It can also serve as a practice tool and a motivational incentive. Imagine rocking out to the sound of your favourite band!

Considering all I heard at the concert and all the videos and recordings of electric violinists I heard later, I am now determined to make a video which would feature an electric violin as a first instrument. With their amazing sharp sound and rawness, I think they would go great in a rock music video!

The Educational Value of Origami

The Educational Value of OrigamiI’m back again, so hello to everyone. Many of you may be surprised to find out that I am an adequate origami artist. I went into this ancient Japanese art of paper folding in order to have an interesting and useful off-line activity. ‘Why origami?’ you may ask. There are plenty of pleasant off-line activities but origami is not only fun, believe me. Did you know that practicing origami activates your whole brain? Therefore, along with fun and relaxation you get some educational value.

First of all, origami is a good example of schematic learning acquired by repeated actions. You need to be very attentive while following the instructions in order to make a good origami piece. They have to be carried out with a great deal of precision which teaches you to be diligent and focused. When I make an origami figure, I always experience feelings similar to those when hunting with a nice crossbow, where you have to be gentle and focused to the maximum,  combined with precise accuracy and patient endurance. Origami is something you can never perform in a hurry. Every action has to be planned, nothing unforeseen is allowed.

origamiAnother reason why I like origami is that it helps to develop your spatial reasoning. Transforming a 2D piece of paper into a 3D figure is a unique exercise which will provide a thorough brainstorm. While folding the paper, your hands follow a sequence of steps which help you learn to create and to manipulate some general geometric shapes. You also get deeper into the basics of symmetry.

Some researchers have been offering origami exercises to people with psychological problems, such as depression for example. The results of these exercises proved to be quite effective and that’s why the origami technique is often used as a part of psychological art therapy. It provides both physical and mental exercise, developing hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.

One of the important results of origami making is emotional satisfaction. As we see a piece of paper transforming into a new development, we feel pleased with the act of creation and raise our self-esteem. This results in us becoming more confident while performing our daily routines. That is why many find the folding of paper not only relaxing, but challenging as well.

For those who have children, I would recommend involving them in this amazing activity. You’ll have the chance to teach them how to be patient, cooperative, and to follow the instructions strictly which can be quite beneficial for their discipline. Start with basics, find some helpful videos, for example, like this one:

However, you should remember to learn origami skills step by step. If you start making a complicated model from the very beginning, you are highly likely to fail and get frustrated. It takes time and effort to develop the capability to fold a complex figure. Some people say it takes as much time as learning to play the piano flawlessly. Take my advice and learn origami techniques. The educational value you can get on your way to mastering paper folding makes it worth trying. So, good luck!

Things to Do Offline

Things to Do OfflineHey everyone! I’m back! Today I’d like to discuss the topic “How to Live Offline?”. Yes, you haven’t mistaken. Really OFFLINE! Nowadays we are so addicted to the Internet that we can’t even imagine our life without it. But it isn’t the end of the world! You can believe or not, but people used to live earlier without Facebook or Twitter.

Moreover, their lives were even better. First thing that you shouldn’t do when you are out of Wi-Fi access points or your Internet connection is disabled is just trying not to panic. It is not a big deal! I can even say it’s a prittle prattle.

You can easily cope with this problem and spend your free time offline even more interesting. If you still don’t believe in it, just spend a few minutes reading my pieces of advice. They are tested by me, personally, so they will surely work out.

Therefore, you are out of the Internet. What can you begin doing?

  1. Singing songs. Do you think it’s too easy? Oh, no, my friends. It is a golden opportunity to relax, to improve your mood, just to have fun, at least. Let’s just imagine. Have you ever had such a situation when you listened to the familiar song and you couldn’t stop but singing. Yes, yes. Exactly. It happens with everybody. Nothing matters at this moment. That is the time when the world stops. It is only you and music. Isn’t it good? You can do it anywhere: at home, outdoors, in a car. Just turn on your favorite music and enjoy. Or you can meet with your friends and go to karaoke. No doubt, it is an excellent way to relax.
  2. Making photos. Today almost everyone has a profile in the Instagram or Facebook or so on, it doesn’t matter. But how long ago have you snapshotted something, besides selfie or your food? Can’t remember? Either do I. So, just grab your camera and go outdoors to the real world. You will be excited how cute the common places are, when you are looking at them through the camera lens. You can make photos of everything around you: a little green park, pairs jogging at it, a lake with swans, a man wearing something odd, a beautiful young lady, an elderly couple sitting on the bench, a modern fashionista, a red squirrel, etc. Moreover, maybe you will be so lucky to find out that you’ve got a talent in it. And it will change your life.
  3. Hiking. We are addicted to going to work, sitting plenty of time in the office, coming back home and sitting in the Internet a rest of the time. We are a generation of couch potatoes. Yes. Be honest! Can you remember when you have gone somewhere just for pleasure, just to see how beautiful our planet is? Hiking is a virtuous way to spend your time. If you think that it is too complicated or you need a steep trail – you make a great mistake. Everything you need is only a wish to do it, a good company, a real nature around you and comfortable pair of shoes, of course. There are a lot of benefits of hiking. I can enumerate only some of them: breathtaking landscapes around you, fresh air, and birds singing songs, a smell of flora and a spirit of adventures. You are not as romantic as I am? Ok. There are several advantages that can motivate even you, cynic people. Hiking can make you healthy. It makes your body fit (better than any gym), improves blood pressure, bone density, supports your general balance, and fortifies your legs. So, call your friends, make an amazing walk, take some water, snacks and so on and begin conquering the world.
  4. Increasing your influence. If you are still here, my pragmatic friends, and you are not those people who are looking for adventures or relax – no problem. I have a solution for you what to do offline. You can start working on your personality. You see, we live in such circumstances that if you want to succeed, you have to convince somebody that you are right. Influence is a certain control. But first of all, you have to be beyond of any doubt what and how you want to achieve, in order to increase your influence. That’s why take a deep breathe, close your eyes and think over whom, what and where would you like to be, for example, in 5 years. Consider how you can reach all you planned. Put all your thoughts on a sheet of paper. So, we have found the starting point. From this time, you have to think about an intension of doing it and how you can become closer to your goal before going somewhere or doing something, even everyday things. If you are going to the party, you must concentrate your attention on that you may meet the needful people or you go there just for fun (to relax and have a good mood for the further steps in achieving your goal). No matter what you do, just be focused. Influential people know for sure what they want, so they find a direct way to their aims. Be easygoing to people around. Be confident of what you are doing or saying. Be polite; show even non-verbally that you are interested in your partner. Be accurate, do always your tasks in time. Be tolerant. Show your appreciation. Try new things. Never stop learning. Don’t waste your time on blaming; try to find a problem’s solution. There are only a few steps, but try them and you will see how helpful they are.

Of course, it’s just a little bit of positive offline activities. But you can be sure that the life without the Internet is bright and interesting. Start living your full life just now. If you have other offers how to spend your free time in an interesting way, share them with me in your comments.

Sourcing High Quality Wood

Sourcing High Quality WoodThere’s something about real wooden furniture that seems rather homey, don’t you think? I enjoy having the stuff decorate my home and making an occasional piece of furniture is actually a hobby of mine. It’s fairly cheap for me now since I have the tools for working the wood on my end and I know where to get the materials for cheap too. Sourcing high quality wood is probably to main concern for most people who want to try and build their own furniture, so that’s what I’ll talk about today. There are a handful of different places to find real wood, so I’ll list a few here.

The first resource I found is actually pretty reliable, though you might have to go through some hassle to really utilize it. People who own land, especially land with trees on it, might just be looking for someone to remove some of that wood. Now whether you’d have to rent said land and pay a fee, or if the owner would actually pay you to come chop down and haul off some of the trees, I can’t say for sure. That’s going to vary based on the landholder with whom you are dealing. But most countries are packed with people who own land and want it cleared for one reason or another, making this a great wood source.

Processing a whole log, or sections of a log, is another story. It also brings me to my next reliable source for high quality wood. Whether you find it and bring it in yourself, or purchase something directly from the people with the right machines, like these, you’ll need to get your wood split up to make it easier for you to work with. Remember, you’re not looking to carve your next chair from a single log of wood – or maybe you are. But if you are, there are probably better guides out there on the ‘net for your specific needs.

Splitting the logs to be worked on chops them up into smaller, more manageable pieces, which makes cutting other pieces out of those significantly easier. Sawing planks off half a log with a face which is already pretty clean is much simpler than trying to do the same right through the bark layer, which could lead to massive cracks and fissures that make most of the log unusable. In my opinion though, it’s important to remember that the roughest work is always done first. For this you might even consider looking at Log Splitter Pro to look for decent machines you could rent elsewhere.

Of course, a splitter is just the start. You’ll need saws, vises, rulers and more to assure accurate cuts. You’ll need a hammer, different kinds of nails and maybe even a set of drivers and screws to secure together the various pieces of wood you want to use to make your furniture. And last but certainly not least, you’ll need the tools for all the finer, finishing work, like sanders, primer, sealant and paint, if you’re going to be using any.
